From NBC29

Original article available here

In a summer speaker series event Friday, the Rutherford Institute is encouraging law students and people in Albemarle County to stand up for those who cannot afford to.

Steven Benjamin, a criminal defense lawyer, spoke to about 40 people on the realities and failures of the criminal justice system.  He's defended people around the country on death penalty issues and does pro bono work to help the poor.

John Whitehead with the Rutherford Institute said, "There's a lot of poor people who cannot afford lawyers so what we try to do during the summer is train these law students when they go into practice to help the poor."

The summer speaker series is free and open to the public.
