PINEVILLE - Oscar Moultrie can once again share his Christian faith through signs in his yard.

Moultrie is the plaintiff in a federal lawsuit filed earlier this month against Berkeley County. The suit challenges the constitutionality of the county's sign ordinance. It was filed on Moultrie's behalf by lawyers for the Rutherford Institute, a civil liberties group.

Moultrie's lawyer, Henry L. Hamilton of Columbia, said Tuesday that he received a letter from an attorney representing the county.

Hamilton said the gist of the letter was, "Hey, no problem. Put the signs back up."

The letter also said the county plans to change its sign ordinance.

County officials were unavailable for comment.

Moultrie said he's put the signs back up, but Hamilton said he's not ready to claim a victory yet.

"The lawsuit will continue until we make sure the new ordinance is not constitutionally repugnant," Hamilton said.
