Chris Hedges Takes on the Christian Right, Fascism and the Death of Democracy in OldSpeak Interview

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - OldSpeak, an online publication of The Rutherford Institute, hosts a provocative interview with author Chris Hedges regarding his most recent book American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America (Free Press, 2007).

Speaking with John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute, Hedges shares his views on the Christian fundamentalist movement in the United States today and his contention that the movement is increasingly beginning to resemble the early fascist movements in Italy and Germany at the beginning of the last century.

Chris Hedges served as a foreign correspondent for nearly two decades for The New York Times, The Dallas Morning News, The Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio. He is the author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award), What Every Person Should Know About War and Losing Moses on the Freeway. He was a member of the team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for The New York Times' coverage of global terrorism, and he received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. A graduate of the Harvard Divinity School and a former seminarian, Hedges is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute and teaches in the Program for American Studies at Princeton University. Hedges is also the recipient of this year's Lannan Literary Writing Fellowship.

OldSpeak, the online journal of The Rutherford Institute, is dedicated to publishing interviews, articles and commentary on subjects often overlooked by the mainstream media in the areas of politics, art, culture, law and religion.
